Peter Post was part of a long line of Posts in New Jersey, going back many generations, after arriving from Holland in 1647. Peter was born about 1813 and owned a tannery. He died at age 77 and, while likely buried in the Oak Ridge Presbyterian Church Cemetery in West Milford, New Jersey, his marker has not been found.
Peter Post's family and life story was tragic, yet typical for the 19th Century. He first married Elizabeth (Eliza) Roome when he was 22 and she was 19. They had 2 healthy children but their 3rd pregnancy seemed to be tragic with both Eliza and the child dying. Peter was just 28 years old, now a widower with 2 young children.
He then married Jane Hopper a year later when she was 21. They had 2 children but, again, their third died at just 2 years old. Jane likely had post-partum heart failure and was probably quite ill. She herself died a couple years later on Valentines Day 1856 at age 34.
A widow again at age 43, with 4 kids under 20 years old, Peter married Rachel Vanderhoof in 1858 when she was 22. Together they had 5 more children and spent 32 years together. Rachel ultimately outlived Peter by 20 years, dying quietly in her sleep at age 74 in 1910.

First Wife. 1816-1841, age 24. Went by Eliza. Married in October 1835 and had 2 living children - Elisha (1837) and Beverly (1838). It seems she died days after giving birth to a 3rd child, Sarah Elizabeth, who then also died at 2 months old. They are buried next to each other in Oak Ridge Cemetery in NJ.

Second Wife. 1821-1856, age 34.
Jane is the direct descendent of our Post family line.

Third Wife. 1836-1910, age 74. Married the widower Peter Post, age 45, when she was 22, in 1858. Outlived Peter by 20 years and is likely buried in Oak Ridge Cemetery in NJ, but no grave was found.

Jane Hopper was born on April 7, 1821 in Ho-ho-kus, Bergen County, New Jersey USA. to Andrew Abraham Hopper (12/29/1788 - 9/25/1859) and Rachel Rutan (9/2/1794 - 5/26/1861). Both would outlive their daughter Jane. The Hopper (or Hoppa or Hoppe) family originally came to America from Finland most likely. The Hoppers had two other children, James and Mariah.
Jane and Peter married a year after Peter's first wife Eliza died after childbirth. They lived in West Milford, NJ where we assume Jane helped to raise Peter's two young children Elisha and Beverly. They had three children together - Jeremiah Hopper Post (1842-1902) and Andrew Post (1846-1905) survived until adulthood. The third, Sarah Lucetta Post (1851-1853) died at 2 years old.
Jane likely developed a post-partum cardiomyopathy (called "dropsy of the heart" at the time) from her third pregnancy and died five years later on Valentines Day 1856 at age 34. She is buried next to her infant daughter at Oak Ridge Presbyterian Church Cemetery in West Milford, NJ. Jerry Post was only 14 years old at the time.
